Leipzig

Jeremy was a half hour away from Cate's address in north Leipzig when his cell phone buzzed. It was Carole Westin, Icky's deputy charged with finding lost money and treasure -- and in chasing terrorist financing, which had become her main job.

"Jeremy, would you mind telling me how you got to these two men?" she asked politely. Excessively so, he thought.

"I probably shouldn't, and let you think I'm a genius detective. The truth of it is that I interviewed Old Luther for one of my books but didn't use much of his material. I found the notes recently and went looking for him, and he sent me to Albert Cate. Are they important?"

"They were once. Luther was a double agent in the '80s, or thought he was. He sent back chickenfeed from American businessmen who were working with us, but he brought us some pretty valuable information about Stasi plans to undermine the West German economy. Cate was his control. A thoroughly nasty type, very tight with Russian intelligence."

"That's what Luther told me," Jeremy responded.

"He should know. Both of them were external agents, allowed outside East Germany at a time when that was very rare, and they both reported back to the KGB through a man named Claude Khan. We hadn't looked at Khan until recently, but now we think he's involved in moving bullion from some of the old Soviet republics back into Germany, then on somewhere else."

"Khan. He's the man Eddie Grant is after. I wouldn't be surprised about the gold. He's out pitching for investors in a hedge fund that invests entirely in bullion. He thinks the price is going to rise rapidly sometime soon."

Carole said, "As I think you know, Icky put a man in Khan's group but he died in a fall from a balcony in Paris."

"Lee Filer. I used to watch his TV show from time to time."

"You have odd tastes. Icky thought he would have enough credibility to penetrate the Khan group because of his background as a TV goldbug. Instead, he went silent soon after he arrived in Paris, and the next thing we heard was his obituary.

"Anyway, Cate was basically a Russian hood. Since the Wall fell he's been working for an artists' booking agent, setting up concerts around the old Eastern bloc. He does seem to be pretty good at that job, but we suspect he's taking advantage of the travel to do other things as well. We haven't seen him and Khan in the same place, but then we haven't been looking. Until this hedge fund and the bullion traffic came onto our radar he was a has-been spy, and we didn't have the resources to watch him. I don't think the Germans were watching him, either."

"Is he still involved in anything that would give me leverage?"

"You could act like you know he's still working for the Russians. The Germans wouldn't like that. I think it's true."
